This is in an endeavour to provide feedback to those collectors who have invested hitherto; and to provide an insight for prospective purchasers and admirers of Bohuslav’s work into how he is performing in the most telling and meritocratic area of the market: the auction house. It is important to us that our Clients are not only acquiring his work because they enjoy and appreciate his pictures, but also that they are investing well. The conclusions cement our belief that Bohuslav is without question an artist who is ‘on the move’ as they say in the industry, and it is our expectation that this trend is set to continue given the increasing levels of promotion and exposure that he is set to receive.

Our findings concluded that of the 47 oil paintings sold at auction in 2009 and 2010, there has been a 40.41% increase in hammer price achieved per square cm in 2010 over 2009. This is specifically for oil paintings. Whilst the trend would appear to be similar for all other media: pastels, watercolours, drawings, acrylics etc, the data is too diverse to analyse to a meaningful extent, and in places is not extensive enough to prove valid.

141,193 square centimetres of his oils have traded at auction in the period (as at October 2010) and in 2010 only 2 of the 32 lots offered have failed to sell in the room on the day. This is an exceptionally high success rate.

Bohulavbarlow.com does not bid on any Bohuslav paintings at auction. Our entire collection of stock is direct from the artist.

In addition to this, the latest RICS Arts and Antiques Survey showed prices continued to rise in Q3 2010, continuing a general trend for the year. The ‘All Lot’ price balance edged up from +24 to +26 i.e. 26% more respondents saw prices rise rather than fall during the last quarter. Bohuslav is well placed with his art clearly now receiving greater exposure, recognition and his price pointing being in the price bands that are performing best.

A breakdown of the survey shows that price increases were most noticeable in the mid-range category of £1,000-£5,000, with the price balance jumping from +16 to +33. The wider category of £5,000-£50,000 also saw a marked rise in prices, with the price balance rising from +25 to +36.

Prices in the lower and higher end of the spectrum still recorded increases albeit at a slower pace. Anecdotal evidence from respondents suggests that reasonably priced items are moving well.
